I’m constantly looking for new books to read with the girls. Recently, I started following Amelie’s Bookshelf and enjoy reading her book recommendations and profiles. In her “Literacy is Cool” page I found a wonderful literacy project called, Little Free Libraries. The idea is to build a tiny house filled with books to share with your community. See the example of a custom made little free library house below. (Photo courtesy of Little Free Libraries)
Our townhouse community is 90% made up of families with children attending grade school. I think this project will be a perfect fit! It would be great to see the neighborhood children share and read books together. A few questions did linger behind my mind like possible vandalism, unreturned books, damaged books but Little Free Libraries FAQ section seems to have come up with some ways to prevent these unwanted activities from happening. Plus, I think its a great way to teach children integrity and respect for community property.
Now, I have to just find a way to convince our HOA to get onboard. Have a great week!
