Joy of Reading

I was reorganizing our collection  of books this morning and realized that we would definitely need another room just for books. A home library and reading room, now that would be a dream come true if we ever got that additional room. In the meantime, I’ve temporarily stored them in the garage and from time to time rotate the books we read in the house. Over the years, we’ve donated boxes full of books and kept the ones we enjoy reading over and over again.

Here are some of Lil’s recent leisurely reading book favorites: (and not willing to part with) 🙂

Geronimo Stilton, a chapter book that revolves around a journalist mouse who finds himself solving exciting and fun mysteries.  The book has fun illustrations, fast paced and humorous plot.

Bink & Gollie by Kate DiCamillo

Adorable illustrations and  humorous book about two BFF’s who show what true friendship and loyalty is all about. Their second book is Two for One and Lil enjoyed it just as much as the first one.

Lil’s other favorites are Magic Treehouse book series, American Girl series (she especially enjoyed “Good Job Kanani” story was set in Hawaii, Lil’s favorite destination), Roald Dahl  books like Matilda and BFG (Big Friendly Giant).  She’s also taking a great interest in books that talk about culture around the world and geography.

Lil and Emmy’s favorite books to read together are Dr. Seuss books.

Another book they enjoy reading together, is Fancy Nancy. I love how the author has made learning new big words so much fun and easy.

Here are Emmy’s favorite everyday books to read:

She especially loves it when we get to the last page of the book where we lift the last flap and a mirror is revealed. She see’s her reflection and I read the book’s text, “There’s my sweetie pie.”

Emmy also loves these “Slide and Discover” books. One’s called, “It’s Time” and focuses on what activity relates to an item and place. For example, it shows a plate, spoon, fork, and table and when you slide down page it show you “It’s time to eat”. The second book, shows different types of jobs in the community.

With Emmy prepping to go to preschool part-time soon, I found this book set, “Little Do’s and Don’ts” by Karen Katz. The set comes with three books, “Excuse Me”, “No Hitting” and “I Can Share.”

When we’re not in the library checking out books, you’re sure to find us at our favorite book store, Half Price Books. Here are a couple books we found on the clearance shelf. (Lil’s book was from a local SF bookstore and Emmy’s from Half Price book)

Geronimo Stilton book was lightly used and only $0.92. Lil was ecstatic.

And for Emmy, I found this Dr. Seuss book “Tubby and the Lantern” for only a $1.00 from Half Price Books. Emmy  and I enjoyed reading all 64 pages.

Finally, here are Emmy’s favorite bedtime books. Every night before bedtime I read to her, Trace Moroney’s Nursery Rhymes book collection. Love that the books are beautifully illustrated and big.

And recently, Goodnight World which helps her slowly mellow down before bed but also reinforces learning of her first words and one syllable words.

What I find so amazing about reading books is the bonding time I have with my kids and the joy and learning they gain from reading by themselves. Even our royal mutt, Bailey agrees.  Happy Reading!
